Electric Miami - Miami, Florida - USA
Miami offers quite a distinct flavor compared to other major US Cities, from the tropical flora & weather to the creative & interesting architecture, neon lights of the city, and even giant Iguanas roaming around. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing this city, and probably walked around photographing it more than any other. This night skyline gave me a particularly electric feeling of excitement. I first noticed it, and felt that feeling driving along the bridge, making note to come back and walk the bridge with my camera. These impressive yachts are also characteristic of Miami. I had explored the docks just before heading over to the bridge, and was quite happy they framed so nicely in this shot of electric Miami.
Gulf Coast Enchantment - Clearwater, Florida - USA
While exploring this beautiful beach town, I was treated to this enchanting and magnificent sunset, exemplary of W. Florida. While strolling the shoreline, I noticed the pelican perched on this no swimming sign. Filled with excitement, I moved quickly, getting into position to capture it, feeling it would be the perfect signature for this In the Moment capture. Thankfully he hung around for a minute while I fired away. The subtlety of the bird captured in the background was a pleasant, surprise addition.
Morning Magnificence - Daytona Beach, Florida - USA
Not long after sunrise, Daytona Beach was bustling with life, including our seagull friends here, despite a gray and misty morning. As the clouds began dispersing, they cleared the way for some sunshine, and provided this magnificent reflection. I was over joyed and filled with a feeling of awe and aliveness as color and life made it's way into my morning.
Key West Magic - Key West, Florida - USA
Key West is famed for it's sunsets. So much so, that they have a nightly celebration-festival on their boardwalk-dock, packed with crowds, artists, performers, and of course, paid parking. The one night I was there, the magic in the sky did not disappoint! It was truly a challenge capturing it among the hordes of others doing the same. I managed to make way through the crowd for an unobstructed view, without stepping on any hands or toes that I can recall. This sailboat made a timely appearance, providing a lovely signature on the memory.
Flock of Seagulls - Siesta Key, FL
Apologies to the 80's band with the namesake, but I can't think of a more appropriate name. I was in awe at the size of this flock! Siesta Key Beach was ranked the #1 beach in the USA by Trip Advisor, and they clearly heard the news as well. It was a drizzly, cloudy day. I took advantage of the little bit of light poking through, and the puddles from the rain, to compose this image, which captures, by far, the largest flock of sea birds I've ever witnessed.
I was excited to visit the "#1 Beach in the USA" according to trip advisor, and the small billboard advertising this upon entering the beach. However, this was a wet, cloudy day, not providing much excitement in terms of color and ocean scenery. But, beauty is everywhere, always present, and I found plenty of excitement and beauty to admire with this large flock of seagulls. Exciting for me, and the young little girl who relentlessly, and joyfully chased after them, causing the scattering and mass exodus that I thoroughly enjoyed capturing.
Driftwood Delight - Lover's Key, FL
I was particularly excited to visit Lover's Key Beach. Among the other highlights it offers, this was my first opportunity to witness, and photograph the phenomena of driftwood on the beach. This beauty, with it's distinct contour, lines and wood pecked holes, did not disappoint, and filled me with delight!
Misty Morning Crowd - Daytona Beach, Florida - USA
When you're vacationing in Daytona Beach, you don't care about the weather, you're just happy to be at the beach. As evidenced by the crowds that were out in full force on this misty, cloudy morning. Look closely, and you can see many subtle silhouettes on the crowded beach. I too, didn't care about the weather, simply happy to experience the ocean's majesty. I thoroughly enjoyed the moodiness, the distinctly layered scenery, and various hues.
Seashell Compilation - Lover's Key, FL
One of the distinct features of Lover's Key Beach State Park is the incredible variety, and quantity of seashells. There are many beds of seashells along this beach, where you either walk around, or walk on, and crush the shells. Fair to assume that plenty of people have walked over this spot. A fascinating collection, captured in an area of approximately one square foot, and just a small sample of what's found here.
Co-Existence - Lover's Key, FL
Another distinguishing feature of Lover's Key State Park is the incredible abundance and variety of birds. Over 125 species have been confirmed at the park, including a fantastic variety of shorebirds. I initially captured three times the birds seen here in this scene, but cropped it tighter. Several species can be seen mingling and co-existing in this capture. A few pelicans were hanging behind me as well.
A roadside stop, as I was compelled to pull over and soak in this scene, driving along US-1 through the Florida Keys. When you first arrive to the keys, it's clear how much more tropical the climate is from the mainland, and the water is strikingly blue. Here, you can almost not see where the water ends and the sky begins, as the colors are mirrored so beautifully and seamlessly. This was the reason for the capture. There is a very faint, thin horizon line. I could have chosen to remove it, and there would be no way to know where the sky begins! Green in the forefront is from the sea grass below the water.
A brief stop through the beautiful town of Naples gave me this interesting sunset. Thick cloud cover muted the sunlight, and limited the colors to yellow and blue. Looking out into the ocean, and observing the water, I noticed these lovely colorful streaks, as well as the silky, neon effect created from the mixture of light and waves. It's this type of subtle dance of color and light that fascinates me, in an otherwise ordinary scene.
Springtime Trust - Ichetucknee, Florida - USA
This capture provides a wonderful memory. While staying in Florida, I met and became quick friends with a fellow photographer, who was also living a nomadic lifestyle traveling and exploring. She had much more expensive and sophisticated equipment than mine. Having just met, I asked if she would allow me to try out her lenses to capture some lovely flowering bushes in the campground. A bit reluctant, she ultimately decided to trust me, and hand over $10,000 worth of lenses, stating that she'd never done this before, and it was a monumental trust exercise, to which I assured her there was nothing to fear. I was elated at the opportunity, knowing I would have much more artistic range & expression than with my own basic equipment. This occurred in the Spring, and it occurs to me that Spring is a wonderful time of reassurance, reminding us that we can place our trust in God, in our path, and the natural cycles of life. Just as nature is renewed every year, and assured to do so, we can rest assured that we also will be provided what's needed to grow, emerge, and blossom, even after experiencing times of cold, wilting, and withdrawal. We can always trust in the promise of sunshine and new life.
Beauty & amazement can be found absolutely everywhere, and quite often, you just gotta look up. This is the Ponce De Leon lighthouse, the tallest in Florida, and 2nd tallest masonry lighthouse in America, with 203 steps. It's known for it's expansive view of the Florida coast, including Daytona Beach & Cape Canaveral. Frankly, I was much more mesmerized with this view, than the one at the top, as I was In the Moment, observing the beauty all around versus racing to the top.
Chasing the Orb - Cape San Blas, Florida - USA
Cape San Blas is a beautiful inlet in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Florida panhandle, south of Panama City. After spending a day there snorkeling and exploring, was driving back to the campsite in the Apalachicola National Forest, with no specific intention of capturing a sunset. However, as the sun descended further toward the horizon, I noticed the thick clouds providing this beautiful orb. So I began a chase after the orb to capture it. Running short on time, I pulled off the road at a spot that I thought would allow me to make the capture through the palm trees. I also endured quite a few bites from the swarms of gnats that were common to this area. But the excitement of the chase, and the thrill of the capture was well worth it!
Wetland Wildflower - Everglades National Park, Florida - USA
A wildflower found in the wetlands of Everglades national park, with blue water and sawgrass providing the background abstraction.
